Crews Restore Power to 24,000 Affected by Arctic Front

Wednesday, January 17, 2018

As of 2 p.m., crews have restored power to approximately 24,000 of the 32,000 customers affected by an arctic front that moved into the state. Crews will continue to work safely to restore power to the remaining 8,000 customers across Louisiana.

Entergy Louisiana expects to restore power to the vast majority of customers by tonight, but there will be pockets where outages will last into tomorrow. Those areas include a portion of St. Bernard Parish, part of the east bank of Plaquemines Parish and part of Lafourche Parish.

The associated low winter temperatures are affecting our system, causing outages and extending restoration times. A majority of the outages are associated with ice, winds, and increased electrical load.

Customers with electric heaters can help speed the restoration process in their area by turning off their heaters and leaving them off for 30 to 45 minutes after the power is restored to their residence.

Crews are facing significant challenges with damage assessment and restoration due to icy road conditions and road closures. Entergy Louisiana crews are focused on safely restoring power as soon as we can. In the meantime, we encourage the public to be safe and stay off the roads if at all possible due to dangerous road conditions. The Louisiana Department of Transportation gives updates on road conditions and urges residents to check 511la.org before traveling.

St. Bernard

Crews have restored 8,600 of the 12,300 customers who lost power after overnight ice and winds caused failure of transmission lines serving St. Bernard Parish. We expect the majority of the remaining customers will be restored tonight, but there will be pockets of customers whose outage extends until tomorrow.

Safety is always our first priority and we want it to be yours too. We urge customers to monitor the weather and implement their own winter storm plans.

– Don’t use candles or other flammable devices to warm your home.
– Check on seniors, who can be particularly susceptible to extreme temperatures.
