Restoration Update: Lake Charles

Share
Sunday, January 08, 2017

An equipment failure at a major substation Sunday morning knocked out power to approximately 29,000 customers in Lake Charles, and while nearly all customers have been restored cold weather continues to affect the pace of restoration.

During cold weather, such a large outage requires bringing on only a portion of customers at a time to prevent overloading of the system.

In the winter many customers leave their heating systems and appliances turned on, creating too much energy demand all at once when Entergy tries to restore power. That power demand could be higher than the built-in protective devices on a line can handle, meaning equipment could trip offline and cause more outages.

Customers still without power can help by turning off their electric heating systems, lights and appliances during an outage. Once power has been restored, turning them back on one at a time, over a period of time will help avoid sudden power surges.

Sunday’s outage started at approximately 7:30 a.m. when a piece of equipment in a large Entergy substation failed, resulting in the widespread outage.

By 8:15 AM, nearly 40 percent of the customers were restored, leaving less than 18,000 customesr without power.  Entergy personnel were able to isolate the damaged equipment and begin repairs while other employees continued the restoration process.

By 10 a.m. more than 50 percent of the customers were restored with Entergy personnel continuing to safely “step-restore” the remaining customers.

At 11:30 a.m., Entergy had restored service to over 70 percent of the customers impacted by the original outage.

The failed equipment was replaced at approximately noon and less than 1 percent of the impacted customers remained without power by 1 p.m.  However, outages continue to occur because power demand is higher than the built-in protective devices on a line can handle.

Crews will continue working until power is restored to all customers. We appreciate our customers’ patience and apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

Entergy is constantly working to improve and provide safe, reliable, and affordable electricity to all customers.  To report an outage, call 800-ENTERGY.
